COMMUNITY SAVES 88.5FM AND VITALIZES ITS TRANSITION TO INDEPENDENT, COMMUNITY-OWNED KNKX, MAY 2016
In response to Pacific Lutheran University’s intent to sell 88.5fm, nonprofit Friends of 88.5fm formed with a fundraising goal of $7 million over the course of 5 months to establish independent ownership of the station that would preserve its mix of local and NPR® news, jazz and blues. Extraordinary community outreach and response secured more than $7 million in only 137 days, successfully founding 88.5fm knkx and proving that “radio for and by the people” is alive and well in Western Washington.
Against a backdrop of shrinking newsrooms around the country, today WAMU 88.5 announced the first stage of an ambitious plan to grow its news staff and strengthen its regional coverage.
